Patchings Art Craft and Design Festival 2010 - A Review

First of all our sincere thanks to all of the exhibitors, many who travelled some considerable distances, to be at Patchings this year. It has proved to be one of our most successful Festivals as over 200 highly talented and creative people contributed to a display of work which was second to none. We are certainly proud to be able to host such a popular event which seems to be growing in stature and now known as one of the UK’s finest art and designer craft events.

Already visitor feedback has been positive. One visitor emailed even as the event finished

“ . . . my daughter in law & I came to Patchings Festival for the first time this year and I would like to tell you how much we enjoyed it, it was truly wonderful, we spent so much time in the marquees we didn’t get everything done and will definitely be back next year . . .”

This year’s Festival attracted thousands of visitors many were local and a great deal came from all parts of the country. Coaches travelled from as far afield as Welshpool, Preston, Manchester, and Essex to name but a few. The emphasis placed upon demonstrating is very popular and attracts many who enjoy seeing art and craftwork in progress. This year was no exception with exhibitors working with metal, wood, glass, ceramics and textiles, along of course with all the painting mediums.

The Marquee with representatives from all the major art material makers was as always a busy area allowing visitors inspired by what they have seen to test and try. Celebrity painters including Shirley Trevena, Ann Blockley, David Bellamy, David Curtis, Charles Evans, Andrew Macara and Peter Welton demonstrated their skills. This year we were pleased to welcome the well known Derbyshire wildlife artist, Pollyanna Pickering as our Guest Artist on Sunday.

To add a different art form, we had music from two local brass bands at the weekend, Carlton Brass and Newstead Welfare Black Diamond Band. Their music added to the ‘quintessential English scene’ according to one visitor from Canada.

Whilst acknowledging our appreciation to all the exhibitors, there is also a vital contribution to the Festival made by all the friends of Patchings who act as volunteer stewards. These very special and generous people add an ingredient to the Festival which creates such a wonderful atmosphere. We greatly appreciate their support, time and enthusiasm.

Works starts soon preparing for the 2011 Festival, the success of 2010 is something to inspire our planning. Next year’s dates are Thursday 9th to Sunday 12th June. If you are interested in either visiting next year or taking part as an exhibitor, please click on the appropriate link below.

Our best wishes and thanks
